A better title would have been Guy Gets Squirted with Goo: The Destruction of John Travolta's Wife's Character's Father. (And after it was written in ink on the call sheets, well, what can you do?) This film has no storm, metal or not, and there isn't a creature, event, vehicle, death crystal, or magic spell called a 'metalstorm.' Add to that the fact that there is no destruction of the bad guy either, and it's plain to see that this is incorrectly named. While Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn is a title, it's appears to be the title of a different movie that was accidentally attached to this project. Hey, two homages in one! Second, don't worry that the title gives away the ending. It's a low-budget rip off of Mad Max and Star Wars. With 3D TVs not really taking off and home video release of the format rather spotty, I would have bet money that I'd never see a 3D Blu-ray release in my lifetime, and yet here it is thanks to the good folks at Shout!įirst things first: It has been claimed that this movie is a low-budget rip off of Mad Max. I was doubtful that this movie would ever be released with its original aspect ratio preserved (the only other DVD release was a pan and scan monstrosity) and never thought it would make it to Blu-ray. Being a fan of shlocky 80's films, I'm excited about this release. It follows the trend of being a pretty cheesy 80's flick whose main attraction is the use of 3D, and surprisingly the effects are actually pretty good. Along with this wave came the awkwardly titled subject of this review: Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn. Most of them were pretty awful, including Jaws 3-D, Amityville 3-D, and Parasite. Can Dogen save the planet from Jared -Syn and free its inhabitants of the evil that has been controlling them? You'll have to buy your own copy to find out.In the mid 1980's there was a wave of 3D movies released in an attempt to combat people staying at home watching movies on their new VCRs. Standing in Dogen's way is Baal, the mutant son of Jared-Syn and the Cyclopean warlord, Hurok. Dogen promises to avenge her father's death and save her planet from the evil leader once and for all but it won't be easy. A lone space ranger named Dogen comes to the aide of a young woman named Dhyana whose father has fallen at the hands of Jared -Syn. Welcome to the planet of Lemuria and the tyranny of its evil leader Jared-Syn. I'm really happy to have this movie on DVD but this is really just another failed attempt from Universal Studios to release a Sci-Fi classic from the 80's as cheap as possible and cash in on its unsuspecting fans. As a fan, you would think that this DVD would have some trailers, still gallery, commentaries or some type of bonus material its bare bones people. I really wish that Universal would have taken more time and released "METALSTORM" in a two disc set offering both standard and 3-D versions complete with the glasses.Īnother complaint I have is that there isn't a menu feature when you put the disc into the player. Maybe the only way to correct it would be to present it the way it was originally filmed, in 3-D. Maybe it's because this movie was originally presented in 3-D that the picture seems blurry and out of focus. The video transfer on this DVD is filled with speckling, scratches and the images seem to be blurry and out of focus most of the time. I'm no expert when it comes to video transferring and restoration but I really expected a much clearer image from Universal. I've waited so long for "METALSTORM-The destruction of Jared-Syn" to finally be released on DVD and now that I have it I'm really disappointed with Universal Studios. This Sci-Fi action film was directed by Empire Pictures founder Charles Band (Parasite, Trancers) and also features his Trancers star Tim Thomerson (Near Dark, Fade to Black). Take a space-age journey into the farthest reaches of the imagination with dazzling special effects and a story that will excite fantasy fans of all ages. If Dogen does not find Dhyana in time, she will be sacrificed to Jared-Syns strange life-giving crystal. David Smith), and the hideous Cyclopean warlord, Hurok (Richard Moll). Dogen (Jeffrey Byron, The Dungeonmaster) the brave peacekeeping ranger, must save Dhyana and the rest of her planet from the of Jared-Syn (Mike Preston, The Road Warrior), his son, Baal (R. A miner and his daughter Dhyana (Kelly Preston, Death Sentence, Christine) fall prey to the evil dictator Jared-Syns reign of terror. Experience the future in 3-D! Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn is the science fiction battle of the ages with giant Cyclopes and intergalactic magician in this futuristic adventure set on the desert planet of Lemuria.
